I can’t remember the last time I made them, let alone wrote them out and shared them with others. But I figured with change and growth, things simply have to, well, change. So this year I am going to not only make them, but share them with you all! I figured this way I could possibly inspire, even if it’s just one of you, to change and grow and do something different in the new year. Plusssss it’s a good way for you to keep me accountable because once I put my New Year's resolutions out there, no matter how big or small the feat, you will have to hold me accountable, right?! I mean after all, it did take me a month into 2018 to internalize these, write them out and post this! 🙈
So let’s stop blabbing (maybe I should make that a resolution - LOL) and get right into it:
1. Live in the Moment. Yes I know. How very cliche of me. But seriously. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized how much of the present I am spending with my head down in my phone. And I’ll look back at a moment I document for the gram and be like “oh that was fun.” But I never actually experienced the fun. I need to learn to balance and document moments for you but then put my phone away and learn to savor and experience the moments for myself and just, yes you guessed it, live in the moment.
2. Save Money. Ugh, this one is just SO hard for me. I've never been a saver. Whether I was working, in school, rich, poor, or had my parents (and now husband) supporting me, I've never been good at holding onto a dollar. Unless it was to save for an item I was too afraid to ask my dad for money, the irony, right?! My thought process has always been that you can't take your money to the grave so I might as well be happy and looking fabulous now! But now I need to learn to balance this out as well. I need to learn how to not only save for a bag or a pair of shoes but actually save for the future - a home, children, or just a rainy day. But of course, still save for those shoes I have my eye on as I write this... 😜
3. Time Management/Organize and Plan out my “Work” Time. I am borderline OCD when it comes to my life. Everything is super organized and has a place where it belongs. But the exact opposite is true about my time management. My time management sucks, plain and simple. I'm the person who, if I have 20 things on my to-do list I can get through everything. But if I have 3 things on my to-do list, I won't get through 1 item by the end of the day. And this hurts me now that I'm my own boss because (1) I don't have someone to report to and (2) some days are just not as busy as others. So starting this year I have outlined what "work" day consists of and I've time blocked when things have to be done. I think this will be the most helpful resolution, not just professionally, but personally as well!
4. No Dairy. I know, this one just sounds weird as a resolution but hear me out. This will probably be the hardest resolution for me to keep because I LOVE dairy. Actually I basically live off of cheese. Cheese platters? Yes, please! I've already eliminated dairy from drinks (aka almond milk lattes all the way). But I still love cheese platters, cheese burgers, cheese quesadillas, basically, cheese anything and everything. So basically I want to kill myself for thinking and doing this but things need to change. Dairy is just not good for you. It causes cellulite, um, no thanks, and has so many hormones we are just not supposed to be ingesting. But the reason I am truly cutting it out is because of my skin. I have been suffering from adult acne for a few years now and nothing - prescription or otherwise, has helped it stop. So after everyone from my husband to my doctor and esthetician telling me to cut it out, I am finally going to listen. It's been 8 days since I've had any type of dairy and some days are harder than others (now I think I'm starting to sound like an addict LOL) but I'm excited to start seeing differences in my body, skin and overall health!
5. Read More. I love reading, always have, always will. But at one point, aka first year of law school, it became daunting to read through case after case, brief after brief, memorandum after memorandum, and sit down to read a personal novel or story. I would literally fall asleep half way through the first page. So guess what...I have time blocked "personal reading time" into my schedule. Its a time for me to detach from the world and get lost in someone else's and I am actually really looking forward to this.
As I'm writing this blog post, I have already finished my first book of 2018 and am about a quarter way through my second book of this month. Which leads me to this non-related point - I want to start a monthly book club on my blog!
So there you have it - my New Year's Resolutions! I'm oddly excited to implement these and basically own 2018 as my b**ch! So here's to that!
Let me know what your New Year's resolutions are this year so we can all help keep each other in line!!
xo, Neghin
